Wai Yee Hong Green Update March 2010
We’ve continued with our efforts to encourage re-use of plastic carrier bags, and reduce waste from the business. After raising £1,000 for the Under Privileged Children’s Charity (UPCC) last year, we hope to do the same again this year!
Customers have been paying 5p for each carrier bag, or encouraged to re-use carrier bags. Our current total from bag sales, in-store collection pots, and proceeds from our in-store advertising board has come to over £250 already!
The average plastic carrier bag is used for five minutes, but takes 500 years to decompose. – DEFRA, the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs.
We haven’t stopped there, though! We’ve also reduced the waste from the store by re-using waste products such as cardboard boxes and packaging as packing materials for our online orders. Waste vegetable waste is now also not sent to the land fill, and put to good use in our new composter!
The Under Privileged Children’s Charity (UPCC) (Charity No. 1365577) is a local charity that provides aid for underprivileged children in Bristol and the surrounding areas.
