Wai Yee Hong, a family-run Chinese cash & carry and the largest supplier of oriental goods in the south west, celebrated the grand opening of their new centre at Eastgate Oriental Centre, near Eastville Market today.
The building is a large dramatic and attractive red white and jade creation with wood panelling, designed by Barlow Henley Architects, built by Midas construction. It is comprised of a cash and carry restaurant, chinese supermarket and restaurant.
Festivities started with the lighting of a traditional Chinese firecracker, followed by unicorn and lion dance demonstrations. There were speeches in Cantonese and English. The Lord Mayor made a weak joke about Eastville but the occasion was one of justifiable celebration and pride for the Bristol chinese community under welcome summer sunshine.
