Enter the dragon – dancing lions welcome start of Chinese year in Bristol

TWO lions awoke from their slumber to welcome in Chinese New Year in Bristol.

Dancers from the Yi Quin Lion Dance Club delighted the big crowd of families gathered yesterday outside Chinese supermarket Wai Yee Hong in Eastville.

The shop owners organised the special performance. Firecrackers were lit first to scare away evil spirits for the new year and then a suckling pig was laid out on a table and candles lit before it was blessed.

The colourful creatures danced and threw out sweets and fortune cookies into the crowd. Streamers and party poppers were let off and some of the bravest children even took sweets from the lions’ mouths.

The traditional Chinese lion dance is supposed to bring luck and prosperity to the new year, which starts today.
