Allan Tan and Raymond Chow had the honour of meeting Terry Waite at a charity garden party held to raise money for the Under Privileged Children’s Charity (UPCC). They handed over a cheque for £1,000, which came from the proceeds of our in-store collection and sales of our plastic carrier bags.

Supermarket bags help underprivileged

Terry Waite was the guest of honour at a charity garden party in Clifton.

The former Middle East hostage, who lived in Bristol for many years, is patron of the Under Privileged Children’s Charity (UPCC) which was holding its annual summer garden party at the Society of Merchant Venturers Hall on The Promenade, Clifton Down.

On behalf of the UPCC, Mr Waite received a cheque for £1,000 from Allan Tan and Raymond Chow from Wai Yee Hong supermarket in Eastville.

Every time a customer needs a plastic bag, they are charged five pence and the money saved is given to the charity.

Mr Waite said: “What Allan and Raymond have done is fantastic. There is nothing more distressing than children who find themselves under privileged. One of the best things you can do in life if you have children of your own is to try to give them happy memories. If children can look back on growing up with happy memories, that’s really something.

“The Under Privileged Children’s Charity is a small charity, but it attempts to give children opportunities in life, and give them some good memories from their young days.”

“Those of us who have made something of our lives have got an absolutely crucial role to do all we can for the youngsters growing up in these tough times. It’s a simple message from a simple organisation which does such a fantastic job.”
